The Dunbar Number: 150

March 18, 2010

According to anthropologist Robin Dunbar, 150 is the number of people with whom we can maintain a meaningful relationship, whether that is in an old school hunter/gatherer society or on your local social media site like facebook.  Yes, we can be friends with many more people but real friends?  Like the kind you can trust and maybe even ask to drive you to the airport?  Not so much.

Just keep that in mind if some of your friends have hundreds of other friends because most of them are not ‘friend’ friends, you picking up what I’m putting down?

I Wish I’d Known This Earlier Today

February 26, 2010

It’s been snowing beautifully all day in NYC. Big fat flakes floating through the sky. (Of course once it hits the ground it’s a different story.) Now that it’s evening and the best of it is over though, I chance across this in the Times:

They timed it perfectly. The Plaza started offering hot chocolate in a colorful Thermos just as the first snowflakes started falling. For $19, you can buy 15 ounces of steaming hot chocolate flavored with cinnamon, orange and port, and the container is yours to keep. Ten percent of the price goes to the Central Park Conservancy. They have it ready to go, so you need only to go to the bartender in the Oak Bar and request it.

I’m heading over there tomorrow. Maybe the snow will continue?

Move Your Money

February 25, 2010

Throughout the whole financial crisis, I’ve felt mad, guilty and a little helpless about doing business with the Big Banks. It’s just oh so convenient!  (Which is not unlike so many other consumer choices we all make.)

But now, moving your money locally has become a little easier:

Twilight

February 25, 2010

I’ve long held doubts about the truth of Verizon’s claims, I think they’ve massaged the data-points, but this piece of advertising takes the claims and puts them to brilliant use. I can’t believe this kind of thing is legal, it’s so good. On the other hand, who the heck would want to pull it?

Wii Weights!!

February 24, 2010

How cool!  This style is made by a company called Riiflex (Everlast already has a clunky looking set on market.) They weigh in at 2 pounds and cost about $30.

Proud Sponsor and BFF???

February 20, 2010

Some in the branding world think that Vitamin Water as a BFF to the Olympics is a great addition to the brand voice. I don’t. I think it’s co-opting consumer language in an attempt to be “cool”…and the net effect sounds like marketers trying to be hip and not quite getting there. Irritating brand voice for sure.

Oxford Dictionary Word of 2009: UNFRIEND

November 17, 2009

Signifies the impact of Facebook on the culture. Unfriend means to remove someone as a friend on Facebook. As in, “I decided to unfriend my roommate on Facebook after we had a fight.” Just looking back at the words of the year for the past five years is fun. Tells us what we think is important in western culture:

— 2008 HYPERMILING: Keeping the tires on your car properly inflated to maximize your gas mileage and doing other things like removing roof racks.

— 2007 LOCAVORE: Eating locally grown food (in sync then with the seasons and the environment; not a big carbon footprint attached to your food either). Speaking of which, the word for 2006 was…

— 2006 CARBON NEUTRAL: Being carbon neutral involves calculating your total climate-damaging carbon emissions, reducing them where possible, and then balancing your remaining emissions, often by purchasing a carbon offset: paying to plant new trees or investing in “green” technologies such as solar and wind power

— 2005 PODCAST:  defined as “a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player”. Seems almost old-fashioned now. SO mid 00s!

— 2004 BLOG: was Merriam Webster’s word of 2004; Oxford had it as the word of the Year in 2003!

Cultural barometer, for sure, this word of the year. From Susie Dent’s fanboys and overdogs:

1908 — Dow Jones
1918 — D-Day
1923 — environmentalism (interesting)
1947 — pop single
1959 — Barbie
1971 — gonzo
1980 — Reaganomics
1988 — vogueing
2000 — speed dating

The culture NOW, as reflected by THE WORD, is green focused and tech focused! What will the themes be in the next decade?

What do you get when you combine karaoke with Guitar Hero?  DJ Hero!  Similar to Guitar Hero, being an expert gives you no edge on the competition.  But, fun rules and the reviews look good.  Let your secret Eminem shine…
