Clean Air

November 9, 2010

The negative can be positive too, as John Cage, eastern philosophies, and countless others have shown. Now this, a billboard for clean air in our modern times. Strange and beautiful.

Generative Exhibition

July 14, 2010

This inventive show is a new collection of works that are a collaboration between Alex Dodge and Brookyln-based tech startup Generative.  On view are prototypes such as “Sleep Talker’ which allows for an unconscious dialog on a kind of dream-based social network.  Man, that is cool!  Show closes Sunday, July 18th at Klaus Von Nichtssagend Gallery.

Dream catching continues to seep into culture with the upcoming release of Inception this weekend.

Silence Please

June 14, 2010

What is going on in the world that no fewer than four recent publications should feature the theme of “silence”? Look at these titles:

In Pursuit of Silence: Listening for Meaning in a World of Noise by George Prochnik

Zero Decibels: The Quest for Absolute Silence by George M Foy

Listening Below the Noise: The Transformative Power of Silence by Anne D. Leclaire

The Unwanted Sound of Everything We Want: A Book About Noise by Garret Keizer

It doesn’t take much volume to hear a yearning for simplicity, a way to cut through the clutter, and at the very least improve the signal to noise ratio in our lives.

Lux-o-Vend

May 31, 2010

Over 10 years ago, Kyla said to me “I think vending machines will sell luxury/high tech items, even artwork and be in places like night clubs, hotels, airports”. This is why she’s my business partner…she’s brilliant. Check out the gold brick vending machine…or shall we say “automated retail experience”! According to an article in the New York Times last week, “Vending machines in neon-splashed Tokyo have electronic eyes that evaluate consumers’ skin and wrinkles to determine whether they are old enough to buy tobacco. In bathrooms at upscale Canadian bars, vending machines with flat irons enable women to defrizz their locks. In Abu Dhabi, the lobby of a luxury hotel has a vending machine that dispenses gold bars and coins at more than $1000 an ounce.” When you can get an iPad from a vending machine, it makes a Baby Ruth seem so pedestrian!!!

Get your sleep!

May 6, 2010

A new study by researchers in the UK and Italy suggests that abnormal sleeping pattern may result in an increased risk of premature death. (The research took data from Europe, the US and Asia over the past 25 years, covering more than a million people and over 100,000 deaths.)

There were two key findings from the research as reported by The Guardian in the UK.

1. Those who sleep for less than six hours a night were 12% more likely to experience a premature death than those who got six to eight hours’ sleep – the ideal amount.

2.  Those who consistently sleep more than nine hours a night are possibly more likely to die early. (Basically, oversleeping is not a risk but a potential indicator of underlying ailments!)

The fastest growing group on Facebook…

April 28, 2010

Is not what you think.  According to a Morgan Stanley Research Report, women aged 55+ have increased 175 percent since September of 2008.  18-24 year olds account for less than 25 percent of total users!!!!!  Finally, over 70 percent of Facebook users live outside of the US.  Hey, I thought we were a super power!

MoMA acquires @ symbol

April 13, 2010

According to Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator of the Department of Architecture and Design, “the acquisition relies on the assumption that physical possession of an object as a requirement for an acquisition is no longer necessary, and therefore it sets curators free to tag the world and acknowledge things that ‘cannot be had’ — because they are too big (buildings, Boeing 747’s, satellites), or because they are in the air and belong to everybody and to no one, like the @.”
