African Baobab The New Superfood

August 22, 2010

Acai berry has been the superfood darling the past few years, but the fruit of the famed African Baobab tree has gotten noticed outside of Africa for its vitamin richness. According to National Geographic, the baobab tree has “six times as much vitamin C as oranges, twice as much calcium as milk, and plenty of B vitamins, magnesium, iron, phosphorous, and antioxidants.” The fruit looks like little marshmallows with seeds stuffed into a papaya-shaped coconut and the flavor is described as both tart and sweet.

Lucky China

June 17, 2010

While the US is a meritocracy…work hard, get good stuff…China is all about luck. Most people may know this already, but it became very clear to me recently when reading articles about China how the concept of luck is truly embedded in the culture. Merit means something too…but good fortune helps you along. Numbers are harbingers of good fortune or not depending on the number. Why…because the name of the number sounds like and looks like something auspicious (or not). 8 is the most auspicious number because the name in Chinese sounds like the name for “lucky”. That’s why the Beijing Olympics started on August 8, 2008 at 8:08 pm. It also looks like infinity which is long life! 4 meanwhile, sounds like death, so most buildings omit the 4th floor and derivatives of 4 (40, 44, etc), much like we omit the 13th (1 +3 = 4….hmmmm) People pay a lot of money for cell phone numbers and license plates with auspicious numbers…hundreds of thousands of dollars in fact. Here’s to crazy eights!!!

Better Than Fake Cigarettes!

Le Whif is BREATHABLE chocolate!!! All of the taste, none of the calories. Each colorful tube of Le Whif gives you up to 10 puffs of chocolately flavor: chocolate, chocolate-raspberry or mint chocolate. It actually doesn’t enter the lungs, but delivers a rich chocolate taste sensation to the tongue and sides of the mouth. And now Le Whif has developed coffee hits…for that caffeine jolt on the go!

Over 10 years ago, Kyla said to me “I think vending machines will sell luxury/high tech items, even artwork and be in places like night clubs, hotels, airports”. This is why she’s my business partner…she’s brilliant. Check out the gold brick vending machine…or shall we say “automated retail experience”! According to an article in the New York Times last week, “Vending machines in neon-splashed Tokyo have electronic eyes that evaluate consumers’ skin and wrinkles to determine whether they are old enough to buy tobacco. In bathrooms at upscale Canadian bars, vending machines with flat irons enable women to defrizz their locks. In Abu Dhabi, the lobby of a luxury hotel has a vending machine that dispenses gold bars and coins at more than $1000 an ounce.” When you can get an iPad from a vending machine, it makes a Baby Ruth seem so pedestrian!!!

iPad TV

May 20, 2010

I admit it. When doing somewhat rote work related things, I like to have the TV on…But no TV at the office, so all of that rote work used to happen at home (usually late at night or on weekends). With the iPad and NetFlix, I can now stream various TV shows and have that on at the office. TV at work…yep, makes the rote stuff go faster and I don’t have to work weekends. Whew!!!

What Year Is It?

April 24, 2010

At the FUSE conference April 14-16, I stayed at the Marriott on N Michigan Ave in Chicago…big Marriott and it’s stuck in 1998. Decor, service…and internet connections. ETHERNET…still!!!! If you can get the ethernet to function (often the “wires” in the room don’t work…as was the case with me after having guys come up to switch them out and an hour on the phone with tech support). Seriously have not dealt with stuff like this for 12 years. I will never stay at a Marriott again as a result. They need to get into this century!

Cultural Phenom – DWTS

March 20, 2010

Watching people who don’t know how to dance LEARN under pressure is fascinating. Even more so if those people are B list, tabloid favorite celebs or sports icons. Watching someone who excels at sports, for example, translate that competitive drive to a ballroom is riveting! Combine that with the discipline and drive of the professional ballroom partners and it’s my favorite thing on TV! I can’t wait. Viva Season 10 of Dancing With the Stars starting Monday the 22nd! Now THAT is reality TV at its best!!!

Classic Architecture in Space!

February 21, 2010

LOVE this view of Earth from the International Space Station. According to the NY TImes “The new window is reminiscent of dramatic round windows in classical buildings, like the duomo in Florence or Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. It also resembles the cupola-like cockpit of the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo’s spaceship in “Star Wars,” and Captain Nemo’s giant porthole in the study of the submarine Nautilus in “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”

Proud Sponsor and BFF???

February 20, 2010

Some in the branding world think that Vitamin Water as a BFF to the Olympics is a great addition to the brand voice. I don’t. I think it’s co-opting consumer language in an attempt to be “cool”…and the net effect sounds like marketers trying to be hip and not quite getting there. Irritating brand voice for sure.
