Look Inside

So much of what a company does, especially a service-oriented company, is about looking outward. But it seems like quite a golden age, a real bonanza age, for companies who want to take the opportunity to look inward, to explore not only its employees and their myriad connections, but to forge new connections internally and leverage whatever might result. New web applications such as Yammer and Cubetree, and now the fledgling Office Medium, promise to put the tools of broad-range social networks at the service of the discrete business culture. And this is only the tip of the mice-click. It seems like a terrific idea to me. After all, what is project management really but a subset of these dealings? Why not open it up, especially with all the real opportunity for turning activity into meaning. Engagement, whatever promotes it, is never a waste.
